What is Toad Patrol

A volunteer-led project helping toads and other wildlife cross roads safely during spring migration.

Why Toad Patrol Exists

Common toads return to the same breeding ponds year after year. Five Gates Lane sits directly across this route, turning a natural migration into a high-risk crossing.

Road traffic, limited visibility and increased night-time movement during warmer, damp evenings all contribute to significant losses during migration season.

Froglife and Toads on Roads

Our Toad Patrol operates as part of Froglife’s Toads on Roads programme, a national conservation initiative working to reduce the number of toads killed on UK roads during their annual spring migration.

Each year, common toads travel from their winter habitats to traditional breeding ponds. Many of these migration routes cross busy roads, putting toads and volunteers at risk. Toads on Roads supports local volunteer patrols across the country to help toads cross safely and to raise awareness of this vital migration.

By working alongside Froglife, our patrol follows established guidance and best practice to protect toads, collect valuable migration data, and contribute to wider amphibian conservation efforts across the UK.

Support from Froglife helps ensure Toad Patrols remain safe, responsible, and effective, while giving volunteers the opportunity to play a direct role in protecting local wildlife.

If you’d like to learn more about the national Toads on Roads programme or support Froglife’s wider work, you can find out more on their website.
