The last couple of weeks have been a busy and exciting time for Five Gates Lane Toad Patrol, and the amount we’ve achieved in such a short space of time has been genuinely heart-warming.

Another get-together at Toad Patrol HQ gave us the chance to finalise rotas, talk through patrol timings, and make sure we’ve got everything in place for volunteers ready for migration season. Alongside planning, we’ve also been busy preparing high-vis vests so volunteers are clearly visible and safe while out on patrol during dark, wet evenings.

Seeing everything come together has been incredibly encouraging, especially with such a huge number of people wanting to be involved. The response from the our local community has gone far beyond what we expected, and we’re so grateful to every single person who has offered their time to help.

Looking ahead to Sunday

Excitement is building as we look ahead to our next volunteer meet-up this Sunday at Belton Garden Centre Cafe.

Meeting more of our volunteers, putting faces to names, and chatting through what a patrol night looks like in practice is something we’re really looking forward to. The enthusiasm, kindness and willingness to help protect local wildlife has been overwhelming in the best possible way.

Spreading the word

Awareness has grown even further over the last couple of weeks thanks to some brilliant media coverage.

One of our Toad Patrol Area Manager, Emma Hallewell, joined BBC Radio Lincolnshire on Thursday to talk about the patrol and why protecting toads during migration matters. Following that conversation, BBC News shared an article highlighting the work taking place at Five Gates Lane.

The coverage has led to even more messages of support and volunteer enquiries. Hearing from so many people who care about protecting local wildlife has meant a great deal to the whole team.

A huge thank you

A big thank you goes to PayPlan for their generous donation towards the cost of our roadside warning signs.

Roadside signage plays an important role in keeping both volunteers and road users safe, particularly during evenings when visibility is reduced and toads are on the move. Getting these signs in place is a significant step for the patrol, and we can’t wait to see them installed.

Feeling grateful

Between planning meetings, volunteer preparation, media coverage, and an incredible level of community support, the last couple of weeks have shown just how powerful local action can be.
